What is the Tarot?
Intro
Much mystique and conflicting information surround Tarot cards. You could ask 10 different people what Tarot Cards are used for and get 10 different answers!
That being said, most people know that Tarot cards are used in some sort of divination. Unless you have studied them or been around those who have, you probably don’t have more information than that.
This article will examine the Tarot Cards’ history, how they are used today and short descriptions of each card.
History
Tarot Cards are found in history as early as the 14th century and seem to have had pretty innocent beginnings. You can still find descriptions of how to play different card games much like the card games played today like Gin Runny, Bridge, etc. Most sources say that the Tarot was not used for prophecy until the late 18th century.
However, there is also evidence, according to some sources, that the Tarot was used to tell romantic fortunes beginning in the mid-15th century.
With their beautiful depictions of nature and people, I am inclined to believe that their function has always been steeped in helping channel our 6th sense.
How are they used today?
Tarot Cards are used to help guide us to our best selves. They are ONLY tools. Therefore, it is the handler that really has all of the capacity to help themselves or others. You MUST be able to understand that the Tarot is not a “yes/no” or “black/white” vessel. For instance, if you are seeking guidance on a relationship, the question should be how can YOU bring the right energy, knowledge, and discernment in order to obtain the outcome you are seeking.
What does the deck contain?
Tarot Decks are made up of 78 distinctive cards. There is the Major Arcana and The Minor Arcana.
